Samona Naomi Williams is bound for the skies not the Wheelchair.

When Samona was struck by a rare illness that kept her bound to wheelchair and bed, it seemed like the world had came crashing on her. However, she was determined to be who she is created to be. Discovering the strength in her, her power, her rare gift of strength, she found her way around to cheat this life destroying illness. It is said this rare condition is incurable, can only be managed with combination of cocktail of medications. With such condition so threatening, humiliating and above all disarming, with unpredictable situations that comes like a wave of storm. Samona struggles to live and cope with daily normal life challenges like bathing etc. She was bound to be a burden and no longer the beautiful young rising film director who was a real asset.
Holding on to that special thing within, Samona collaborates with her photographer friend to create stunning images that are never been seen before. These images have not only been a source of strength and security for Samona but has become a source of inspiration, motivation and hope for many. It has become a campaign creating awareness on this illness.

How does Samona feel about her condition and where does she find strength to keep going ?
"Realising I wasn't going to recover easily, or quickly or worst still ever, I didn't know what to do. I had nightmares and I thought I could end it - MY LIFE!
There wasn't anyway I would live a life of being a burden to anyone. I felt worthless.
But then somehow, my strength soared thinking of diamonds, golds and all the beautiful and valuable things of life all went through immense pressure to become what they are. Then I began to see my illness from a different perspective, I began to see my value, my worth. I slowly began to see my illness as less torment more of growing into something greater than I have been. Today I could still contribute to my family and society by merely allowing myself to be me."

In trying to cope with this rare condition, Samona and her friend created an art project with their stunning images to tell the story of a woman BOUND to for the wheelchair but finds a way to cheat an illness that is not just debilitating my has no place in the life of anyone.

"This project BOUND meant I didn't have to be afraid any more. It gave me purpose, it soothed my pain and calmed my dark thoughts. It gave me my life back".

Bra on or Bra off, the bra war comes back thanks to scientists and their studies.

M&S spot frill bikini top£19.50
A French Prof. have sparked another Bra war after almost 5 decades that we have seen the Bra war calm down. It was in the 60s that feminists ditched their bras in a fight for their right. But today, it is far from the political jangle. The scientist have given us even more reason to keep our headlight on the full beam.
In his study with 320 women  within the age of 18 and 35, Prof Jean- Denis have weighed in heavily supporting the need for women to go braless branding it a 'false need'. He went on to say that both medically, physiologically and otherwise, breast do not benefit from the supposed bra support.
Claiming also that after a year of not wearing bra,the nipples of the participating women between 18 and 35 rose by about 7mm bigger on the average.
However, other women in the opposing school of thought have branded the findings useless and needless. Accepting though that bra could sometimes be uncomfortable but not as uncomfortable and embarrassing  as it is without the bra. One female commentator have said, if the support is needless, why then do we hold it with our hands when on the run. She would rather gag her thing with a bra as firm as M&S new range of bras.
Since the division in opinion I would like to know which side of the war are you, is it bra on or bra off for you?

Nubian Beauty photography: Beauty, Nudity and the Black Woman. A Woman's quest to get it right.

Preview

Louise Sam is a 'Western Medical Herbalist turned photographer. In her quest to explore the relationship between concepts of beauty and the human body leads her to launch the Nubian Photography. The human body which is specifically the Black woman's body is what she is to discover.
In this time, launching the Nubian photography, she finds that the 'Nude Black Woman's body holds a strong historic significance. That negative stereotype of the 'Black Woman's Body' are still present in this modern day is something that eludes her.
Having been a nature photographer (her original passion) and moving into sports photography, Louise have had the opportunity to travel around and across England and Asia taking epic images for Muay Thai boxers and camps in London and Thailand.
Louise chats with MY Black Woman on the relevance of her launching the Nubian photography, the meaning of beauty and all that you need to understand about the 'Black woman's Body and beauty.

How does your medical experience influence your understanding of beauty and how do you translate this knowledge into creating beautiful images?

My experience as a herbalist has given me the opportunity to better understand how the systems of the body interact, but also how the body interacts with our environment, with other people, with the things that we ingest and absorb into our bodies etc. Beauty therefore surpasses our physical form and like creating images, it requires constant work and discovery.

How long have you been a photographer?

I have always had a great appreciation for photography, as my father is an amazing photographer. However, I took up photography on a more professional level about eight years ago.

What truly inspires you?

Although we tend to moan about it, the weather in Britain is quite inspirational. In places like the Caribbean we do not get to see such extreme changes in the seasons. In Britain the way in which the same landscape can look so different throughout the year is incredible. The movement of spring and the colours of autumn are some of the most beautiful sights that I have ever seen.

Is this your first exhibition?

It is the first time that I am exhibiting a collection of my images. It’s quite exciting.

How does sports, nature and photography define who you are?

I think it goes back to the way in which all of these things interact that enables me to keep exploring myself, the world and the people around me.

Why did you choose to launch nude photography?

A big part of the inspiration for the Nubian Nude shoot is to begin to identify our definitions of beauty as women of African descent. When I began to look into the topic I was finding that there have been and there continues to be many taboos about the nude Black woman. In some cases she was associated with sexual exploitation, promiscuity and often ridiculed.

How far has the stereotype against the black woman affected her personality, self esteem and development?

The aim of my work now is to explore how these past experiences influence us in the age of the video vixen. From speaking with some women in the community it is evident that we have issues with accepting and understanding our bodies which has detrimental effects on our self-esteem and the relationships that we form with others.

What significance is it for you to express the Black woman’s beauty through nude photography

Being photographed nude is a very powerful experience because there are no shields or disguises. It captures our insecurities but it enables us to chart our development and growth as we work towards understanding and challenging those insecurities.

How do you define beauty and who is an ideal woman?

I would say beauty is a constant discovery and exploration. It is forever changing but at the same time grounded. An ideal woman would therefore be someone who is willing to learn and evolve.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you as a photographer?

The best things are probably being able to take images for family or friends when they have organised events and being able to give them a memento of their efforts.

What advice would you give to the Black woman regarding herself, beauty and the stereotype?

It is important to constantly challenge our ideals and definitions of beauty. We always need to question whether these definitions are our own or taken from other cultures or ethnicities. We need to speak with other Black women around and be open to new ideas.

The Nubian beauty photography exhibition will be held on the 25th of January 2013. Louise is on twitter: @LouiseSSam.

Recharge your sex life with the healing power of African Shea butter.

Child birth, stress and challenges of life and work can be a factor in determining a woman's level of libido. Though some may react to stress by having an increased sexual drive however, the majority always end up with dangerously low libido. When this happens, there is a risk of having to strain your sexual relationship with your husband or partner and at the long run ruins the entire family live you have put everything in line to build. More still, you see your husband having it with other girls or women out there. This agreed could be a very pathetic situation for a woman.

How to dictate when your libido is dwindling:
Signs of lowering libido can vary from one individual to another. However there are some similar signs that can never be ignored.
1. Reduced or complete loss of sexual urge for more than 2 weeks.
2. You are becoming more and more difficult to be aroused even when he tries .
3. Dryness of the *** even when you feel you want it.
4. Bruises and pain after sex. this may be due to lack of proper lubrication from your secretions.
5. Total disinterest in your man and or fear of having sex with a man you truly love.
We can go on and on. If you happen to have any of these signs, especially not lubricating well even when you have the urge then African Shea butter may be what you need most.

How to use?
When you are sure there isn't another underlying health condition and it is just that you are not lubricating well and as such losing interest  and you are sure you still are in love with your guy then...

1. Run a warm bath every night and clean yourself very well.
2. After, rub in African Shea butter in all the right places.
3. Get your man (or anyone you trust) to massage your back muscles with the African Shea butter.
4. Use the African Shea butter to massage your man's religiously every night for at least 4 to 5 days.
5. When you have started seeing some improvement, and you want to have a go, then before having it with him, make sure you apply a reasonable amount on him and also massage your inner self too.
Then gently slide into each other and take it slowly for the first time and repeat this each time you are in the mood.

How it works?
African Shea butter is not just a lubricant or an oil based pomade. It is a naturally occurring substance that works with your body to release a natural lubrication. It also works by relaxing tensed muscles and calming the body. When the body is relaxed, it is in a better shape to release substances that generate secretions necessary to lubricate all your organs including your inner woman. Applying African Shea butter on the man helps to keep the area moist and smooth for easy penetration.

So now get your hans on African Shea butter and get your love life back!

New Mums back to shape guide.

Getting back to shape after birth is every woman's nightmare. But it does not have to be so. It takes a woman a whole 9 good months to stay pregnant and give birth. What then makes you think the birth body will disappear in a click of finger.
My job here is to help you stay realistic and gradually get your body back. Don't be deceived by the celebrity quick fix after birth pictures you are always bombarded with. For me it is all about staying healthy, eating well and exercising gently until your ligaments and muscle tones are firm again.
The first step to getting back to shape is to stay off the pressure to being as before. This is because, once the pressure sets in, chances are that you might end up with stress and over eating and depression which in turn will only make matters worse. That said, we will now take to the most important guide to help you stay as firm and toned as possible after the bump.

1.Healthy eating:

The first and most important thing is that your healthy thin or fat. It is important that you do not starve yourself for the sake of shape. Proper meal times should be adhered to. At least breakfast, lunch, dinner must be observed. For a breast feeding mother or those that had Cesarean section, more top ups may be considered.
In eating healthy, you have to go for more green vegetable, these will help with digestion and absorption. Also are essential for building your blood cells and level. The fibres help in elimination processes as well. They keep your heart healthy too, and cancer is shunned.
The blue/ black hue fruits are also very essential for building the immunity levels. With them you are armed for the battle of ownership especially for those that had Cesarean section. Also the will help with strengthening your bones and ligaments, also keeping your skin fresh and smooth.
The yellows are also superb for strengthening the heart muscles, lowering hypertension and is hard on cancer cells as well.
The red fruits and vegetables are very important sources of  vitamins and minerals that keep cholesterol levels down.
Yes traditionally, Black peoples food are usually more of starchy foods, it is important to still take your normal foods, but adding or increasing your consumption of vegetables and fruits will not only help with your muscle tone, but will help to get you a better shape and greater health.

Exercise:

Exercises are very crucial but doing it right is the most crucial at this point. See below for the don't with the exercises.
Before 6months of off loading, you should never subject your body to the following,
a. Jumping
b. Running or jogging
c. Sit ups
e. Stretching.
f. Boxing or strenuous exercises.
Before you can do these, you must get the clearance from your health care provider. (Nurse, Midwife or Doctor).
At this time, the main focus should be to stay active, take and enjoyable walk or strolls, take your child in the pram and get a good air outside. A good rest and sleep, plus pelvic floor exercises are important .
The signal your body gives you should be more accurate than any other. So watch and listen to your body. Simple exercises are the most you can do for now to keep the blood flow going. Every woman's major concern is the tummy sagging, but the bad news is there is no fast rule to it. Easy does it. ( Watch out for our postnatal exercise guide next)

Postnatal exercises before 6 months:
1.Walking
2.Swimming
3.Pelvic floor exercises
4. Bottoms up
5. Abdominal guarding
6.Tummy tucks.

Take enough fluid:

Fluid in take is very important to stay healthy and plump and it is a MUST at this time especially for the breast feeding mother. Drink, drink and drink any fluids, water, juice etc (not alcohol).

Wear for comfort.

Looking good is good. But now your comfort is more important. Firm sports bra during activities will help reduce, stretch marks and discomfort. Use of breast pads helps to check the leaks. Tights, help to prevent and minimise varicose veins, and  gives a good support to the muscles. The also will help you create the illusion of a toned body and so you appear shapely.
Do it safe.

Simple tips on how to Autumn proof your skin this season.

The sudden change in the temperature coupled with the allergens from the falling leaves can leave your skin on the edge. These simple tips will help you to understand and cope with the common autumn skin conditions.
This is the time of the year when people that suffer skin conditions like dry skin, or eczema notice the condition getting worse. The flare ups can be a night mare for the person and the entire family. The itching and discomfort can be irritating and annoying.  Experts, believe, the sudden change in the weather condition; the wind, the falling leaves and the colder temperature are all culprits to the worsening conditions. However, with careful understanding and following the simple steps, you will be able to help yourself gain some skin comfort and enjoy the natures fresh gift.

Lock in the moisture:

As much as we want to curl up with the heater warmth,it is necessary that we do not sap our skin of the moisture needed to stay pumped fresh. The heating has been noted to dry up the moisture in the rooms leaving your skin dry and longing for moisture.

Tips:

1. Remember to keep your room well ventilated, let in some fresh air to exchange for the moisture sapped one indoors.

2. Avoid very hot baths and showers. Afterwards, pat dry your skin, and put on moisturisers. Topping up with heavier moisturisers will go a long way.

3. Add some emollient oil to your bath water and avoid staying for so long in the water.

4. Avoid close contact with the heater (radiators).

5. As much as possible avoid soaps  as the tend to wash off the natural oil on the skin leaving your skin unprotected.

6. Eating balanced diet, with enough fruits and vegetables at this time can not be a luxury rather a very important part of your routine. This will help keep your immunity optimised.

7. Take food supplements regularly. Vitamins and mineral are lost each month from menstrual cycle and women should learn to top up these essential minerals with food supplements.

8. Avoid using fabric conditioners and watch that the stressor is not your detergent. If so experts have said that non biological detergents are safer.

9. Avoid excessive exposure to extreme temperatures.

10. Exercise, a stroll out doors will expose your skin to some coolness that leaves you freshened.

Have you got some more tips, share it . You could be saving someone from misery.

How can I protect myself from sun damage.

Protecting  yourself from the sun damage is simple:

1. Limit your exposure to the sun.

Though not all exposure to the sun is dangerous. The sun helps your body to absorb vitamin D, which is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Minerals necessary for healthy bones and teeth.

What is mind boggling then is knowing when  exposure has become excessive. Well, depending on these factors one can have an idea of how much time to spend exposed to the sun.  Time of the day, the place, skin colour and intensity of the sun all play a role in determining the extent to which one can stay exposed. Expert advice puts it like this; do not exceed 30 minutes of exposure without a form of protection.

2. Wear some form of protection.

Put on sunscreen all over your body, concentrating on the more delicate exposed areas . Eg, the face and neck. You have to also allow about 5 to 10 minutes  for the cream to get absorbed into the skin before going under the sun.

Wear  hats while under the sun , this will serve as a barrier from the direct rays on your face, thus, protecting your face, eyes and hair.

3. Stay away from direct sun heat.

Use of umbrellas, staying under a shade like tree etc. will not be a bad idea too. Any thing that will help to create a barrier between you and the direct contact with the sun rays should always be considered.

So now go on stay sun damage free while you enjoy the summer

You and the sun: Protect your ebony from the UV rays.

It doesn't matter what colour your skin is. Excessive exposure to the sun can be extremely  damaging to the health, texture and glow of your skin.

For the black woman, it's even more important to understand how your skin interacts with the sun. This is because, it is easier for you to get deceived by your dark skin colour. Though it is true that you have  more melanin present in your skin to protect you from the sun damage. It is also true that it does not guarantee protection when you are excessively exposed to the UV. Your dark skin makes it even more difficult to detect  when damage occurs.

Therefore, it is even more essential that every woman, black, white, red whatever colour you prefer to  take precaution while going under the sun. This of course will depend on the place, at what time of the and the intensity of the heat at the time. The unfortunate thing is that the wrinkles may not start to appear at the time of damage and the individual may not relate it to the excessive exposure later in life.

What are the side effects of excessive exposure to the sun?

1.Photo-ageing(premature wrinkles):

Excessive exposure to the UV rays of the sun can cause a reduction in size of the outer layer of the skin (squamous epithelium), thereby, slowing down the production of  collagen. In effect making the skin lose its contour, elasticity and glow, causing sagging, appearance of premature wrinkles and deepening of the fine lines. Making the sufferer look much older than should.

2.Erythema ( sun burn) :

Simply put; this is the inflammation of the skin tissues due to excessive direct sun heat.  When the skin absorbs so much energy from the UV rays,  inflammatory process occurs. In response to this, there is a rush of blood cells to the areas in an effort to fight the intruder. Thus, the redness and swelling on the affected areas. Though the redness may not be immediately seen on the darker skin, it does not necessarily mean that there is no damage.

3. Dark patches on the skin

Melanin is a naturally occurring substance responsible for the darker colour of the skin.  It is responsible for protecting the skin from the sun.  But due to damage to the skin by the sun rays, it could become excessive or inharmonious leaving some permanent discolourations in the form of patches usually on the face due to its delicate nature.

 4. Skin cancer:

Skin cancer is a very serious and  life threatening side effect of  excessive exposure to the UV rays. Unfortunately, millions of African women die each year from undetected skin cancer possibly due to  damage from excessive sun exposure.

Therefore, it is absolutely necessary then that the awareness be spread to especially to every black woman on the need to stay protected from the ugly effects of the sun.

Give and return smile gestures:

It leaves a great feeling when smiles are exchanged. It doesn't matter who it is that smiled at you, just respond with a smile too. Relax and for once leave suspicion alone. Smile back first before thinking of their intentions.

Focus on the benefit:

Now listen, there are going to be a few who are always always not in the mood.  But you know what? You are not going to let them sabotage your happiness. You know why you chose to stay positive. It is for your own goodness sake. So forget what any other is thinking. After all, its your face.

Stress and Emotional Issues:Anger, fear and irritability

During stress, there's usually a major deterioration in the emotional stability of the individual, which in turn adds more pressure to the already pressured well being.

Anger and fear usually are the major emotional breakdown that ensues. The others are directly or closely related to both -  anger and fear.

Anger: Usually comes with disappointments due to failed expectations, and these expectations are surprisingly based on pleasing others rather than self.

Overcoming anger due to expectation: Prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. In this way, you are largely equipped to withstand any turn down.
Congratulate yourself for the efforts that you have made rather than focusing only on result. Come on, you deserve a break afterall.

Fear: Usually of the unknown, comes with it anxiety and could result to withdrawal syndrome, failure and depression. Fear is a very dangerous thing, it can send the mind packing. Every effort should be made to avoid or better still confront that causing the fear.

Coping with fear due to stress: First come to terms with it that you are afraid of. is it fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of what? Whatever it is is it worth more than you sanity and life? What is the worst thing that could happen if what you feared happened. Loss your job, home, relationship or what? Now when you have answered these, why not instead of worrying about that, you channel your energy to preparing your plan B. As hard as it may seem, there is always an option in every situation. Explore your options and take to it. It is even riskier not attempting.

5. Learn to relax and avoid any unhelpful thoughts and situations that could affect your appetite.
6. If weight loss continues and appetite has not improved, it will be necessary to seek for medical help.

Excessive/increased appetite: Some people tend to comfort eat during stress. This could result to excessive weight gains and could be dangerous to life and health of the individual.

What to do:
 1. It will be a good idea to take as always enough fruits vegetables and fluid.
 2. Replace the in between snacking and cravings with those.
 3. Eat very little portions of meal at a given time.
 4. Think towards increasing your outdoor activities.
 5. Avoid late night eating.

A black woman’s guide to understanding stress: the first step to stressing out stress.

There is always going to be stress in our lives. It is a part of who we are. However, excessive stress usually is the greatest threat to a healthy living. Understanding the actual meaning, causes and signs of stress is the first step to coping and stressing out the monster that threatens us.

What is stress?

Stress in the most simple term is a pressure exerted forcibly on a body/object  to produce a defirmation . It is a compulsion, an influence. In other words, stress is that which brings about a reaction on the normal body flow. By default, our body has a response mechanism of fight or flight designed to protect us from harm and get us ready to take to challenges.

During a stressful period, the body produces and releases chemicals (hormones- adrenaline) which trigger the alertness and readiness to respond. Excessive influx of these chemicals carry with it consequences that will affect the ability of the body to function effectively. It is this breakdown of functionality that makes excessive stress to be a poison to a well being.

Causes and effects of stress on the black woman.

There are different circumstances and situations that can cause excessive stress for the woman. It is usually those things that could result to or make you to be; frustrated, angry, unhappy, tensed, or make you feel worthless.

Black women for  centuries have been subjected to so much stressful conditions that leave them appearing less worthy compared to women from other races. Due to our cultural believes, poverty, racism, family situations plus several other situations that we have come to live with.

Cultural believes: Culturally, there are so much expectations heaved on the shoulders of the woman. From caring for the family- children, husband, parents, parents in law and other members of the family. Often with so much to do, the woman have less and less time to think and care for herself. Unfortunately, women have left these to continue for ages, handing down so believes further to their sons and daughters. Thereby continually creating the environment where it is okay for a man to use and abuse the woman without remorse.

Poverty/Neglect: Often, when poverty hits the family, it is the woman who bears the brunt of it all. Given the believe system that we have just discussed, the woman’s needs of course is never a priority, leaving her neglected and unkempt. She develops an attitude of a super woman., caring for everyone and neglecting the goose that lay the golden eyes. In effect, we see a sudden crash in her health resulting in chronic arthritis, hypertension, depression and even death.

Racism/discrimination: This has remained the most challenging source of stress for the black globally. Discrimination and let down which black women receive directly and indirectly from employers, carers, the media and the society in general has kept the black woman defensive, angry and frustrated leaving them with attitudes and lifestyles that are unhelpful both to their health and self development.

Family: Child bearing adds stress to the lives of every woman not just the black woman. But with support and help from the family the woman copes better. With situations such as those discussed above, it is extremely challenging and stressful for the black woman to cope.

Other sources of stress: So many other sources include; job stress, sudden death, illness, bad relationships, domestic violence, just to name a few.

10 secrets to looking beautifully younger.

Kay
Growing old is some thing inevitable and each day that passes we grow to become older than we have been. Therefore it is about time for  women  to embrace age as something that goes on with time. Celebrate your age as you  get older gracefully. Below are few tips on how to up your game.

1.Fall in love with yourself:  The greatest love of all is love for self. Love your body and be passionate with it. This will help you to stay grounded and be motivated to stay away from whatever is not good for you. You are the only one who is you and are a unique entity. Enjoy it now!

2. Eat healthy: Fruits and vegetables have remained the healthiest food to enjoy without the weight bug. Be sure of what you put in your mouth and the consequences. Stay away from too much alcohol, sugar and pastries.  Drink enough  water and other fluids. Stay away from in-between meals and late night eating. Make friends with the antioxidants.

3. Exercise:  Enjoy a session of exercise at least once a day.Make it a part of your daily routine.  You do not have to break the bank. And if you are the very busy type, there are yet very easy no time consuming exercises that you can do. E.g., while on the computer, you could practise pelvic muscle exercises. (Squeeze the back muscle and release.) Do this as often as you can. No one is going to find out. You could dance to your favourite tone right at the comfort of your bedroom.

4. Stay away from stressful conditions: Simple. If it gets stressful get out and unwind. Excessive stress has never been anyones friend and should not  have a  place in the life of a pearl woman. It’s a good idea to find some relaxing place to cool off maybe the beach, or just have a chat with some one that will make you laugh. Just have a laugh and go easy with life. Pay attention to what is important and please do prioritise.

5. Smile: Smile has the power to get you recharged and energised. It relaxes the facial muscles and keeps the heart softened. It brightens up the eyes and the mind. When you smile the world smiles back at you.

6. Be happy: Happiness comes from within. It goes way beyond what’s going on around you. You can make a personal decision to be happy come what may. One of the secrets is to stay away from any thing that ways you down.

7. Keep makeups light and toned to your hue: Excessive makeup adds age to the wearer. The less the better. Make sure the colours on your face are not over powering your natural beauty. Have your face moisturised and pampered. Remember to wash off all makeup before bed. Just water is the most recommended for the purpose. The idea is to keep the pores open and allow free flow of oxygen

8. Go for styles that flatter you: Know your body shape and go for the clothes and styles that really suit you. Do not compromise with your comfort and confidence. When you are confident and happy you naturally feel and appear younger. Take an honest friend with you when shopping and ask for their opinion.

9. Never bother yourself about your age: Age is only a number. How old you feel and think you are that’s what it is. Worrying will only make things worse. Be free minded and explore new things. That will keep you off the hook.

10.Get a very good night sleep: A good night sleep helps to relax the mind, the body and the soul. It renews the entire being and leaves you fresh for new heights. The benefits of a good night sleep can never be over emphasised. The experts recommend you get at least 6 to 8 hours of good night sleep every day.
